What is in Your Alcohol?

Most probably, we’re not strange to the aisles of grocery stores. What’s Alcohol?

Humans and alcohol have been best buddies for as long as man can remember. This beverage is both a psychoactive and chemical drug. In chemistry, alcohol comes in existence when there’s a group of hydroxyl or hydrogen and oxygen atoms that’s replaced by hydrogen atom in process of hydrocarbon. Secondary alcohols are then created when it binds with other atoms.

The secondary alcohols created have 3 types which is what we use often which are ethanol, isopropanol and methanol.

Ethanol

This is the one and only alcohol that is safe for consumption. The other types of alcohol are then used for purposes of manufacturing and cleaning. For instance, methanol or methyl alcohol is the kind of component primarily used in boats and cars as its fuel. Additionally, it’s used in manufacturing several other things like:

  • Antifreeze
  • Paint remover
  • Windshield wiper fluid

Isopropanol and methanol are poisonous and therefore, can be fatal among humans when taken. Since it triggers liver failure, even a small amount of rubbing alcohol or methanol could lead to untimely death.

Types of Drinking Alcohol

Alcoholic drinks come in 2 categories which are Distilled and Undistilled. In the latter, it is otherwise known as fermented drinks. Fermentation is a process in which yeast or bacteria is converting sugar into ethanol. In fact, beer and wine both undergo the process of fermentation.

Distillation on the other hand is a procedure that follows fermentation. The entire procedure is converting fermented substance into a higher alcohol concentration. It does this by separating components of the fermented substance similar to water. Common examples are spirits and liquors.
